LIPS zine is a zine devoted to female sexuality, as broadly as one wants to define "female." Originally started in Williamsburg, VA, LIPS has moved to Richmond, and meets regularly at the Flying Brick Library on Saturdays at 3. Organizers and contributors to LIPS will be reading their own work and some pieces from the zine itself.
Other readers include Stacey Randolph and other folks who attend a small radical discussion group called Relaxing on a Sunday Afternoon. More info from an organizer: "This is a laid back place and time for people to come together to create art, play/listen to music, discuss activism, feminist theory, queer theory and cultural intersections. Often we discuss whatever is most relevant at the time, there is never a time where we're lacking in social issues to talk about and often the issues appear organically from sharing our personal perspectives. Our interpersonal experiences intersect with the structures while we attempt to understand our abilities to act within them. There is no salient mission or distinct platform on which we stand, just people who care deeply gathering to converse, create and relax. Past areas of discussion: False Binaries, Transgender spaces and resources in RVA, Radical Feminism, Subversion and Revolution, LGBTQQIAA suicide and mental health and so much more... these seem heavy, but for the most part after these discussions we all leave feeling a little bit lighter. There is never one Sunday that has all the same people as involvement is always fluid. Though one thing is always consistent, I am always amazed by the power of shared experience and expressed thought."
Also, there will be folks from the Mind(ful) Liberation Project, reading from their group's work. Info about them is below:
"Mind(ful) Liberation Project, Richmond's Icarus Project chapter, is a network of people living with and/or affected by experiences that are commonly diagnosed and labeled as psychiatric conditions. We believe these experiences are mad gifts needing cultivation and care, rather than diseases or disorders. By joining together as individuals and as a community, the intertwined threads of madness, creativity, and collaboration can inspire hope and transformation in an oppressive and damaged world. Participation in The Icarus Project helps us overcome alienation and tap into the true potential that lies between brilliance and madness. We are a collaborative, participatory adventure fueled by inspiration and mutual aid."
