The starting question for a peer-run community radical mental health project must be: Who are we?
I can't answer this. This is a new start because it is a new place. What Santa Barbara Icarus Project will be is up to who makes it and who is it. These are the opening thoughts/visions of one Icarista based on the inspiring precedents of many others - a proposal of a starting place.

The Icarus Project is a radical mental health network centered around peer support, education, and self-creation through alternative interpretations of our experiences, beyond biomedical models of the person and of experiences commonly designated as "mental illness."

The ultimate goals of the group center around: creating new language and culture suited to our individual experiences of the world; giving meaning to our experiences, understood in the context of our stories; and learning to use our "dangerous gifts" that make us unique and lend our perspectives force. Thus we want to liberate marginalized perspectives.

Our community's themes aim to exploration of self-care; creativity; collaboration; exploration; learning (about ourselves, about anything related to madness now and in history).

We want to open a broader dialogue: for example: What is psychiatry? How is the relation of the Self/individual (you) to culture (here) problematic? What is 'normal,' 'sameness,' 'difference,' etc? ...

The Icarus Project is collective and non-hierarchical. The principle of safe space guides our meetings and events. Any person is welcome, if not violating in any way the safe space of another. And of course, self-determination and self-definition is fundamental. Whether you use diagnostic labels, take medication or not, you can be part of this movement working to create an open and accepting environment for a diversity of people.
