01/27/10 Collective Call-Mad Mapping w/Kiran

Eric, Kiran, Molly, Madigan, Angel, Annie, Will

Personal Check Ins

Kiran will make note as action steps arise.

Review of last week’s notes.

Goal:  Define “basics” and priorities for TIP

1) Define timeframe for priorities
2) Each individual list top 5 “basics” or priorities for TIP
3) Pair off into partners.
4) Have time alone to list top 5
5) Call partner to combine/discuss/negotiate/prioritize top 5 (from 10)
6) Pair partners with another team of partners/combine once more.
7) Come together as group/end with top 10.
8) As a whole group/sticker or tag top 4 for visual representation.
Allows individual introspection, partnered discussion and visual representation.
Use goggle doc for visual representation.

Email questions during process to Kiran.

Design Newspaper headline about TIP 100 years from now.
Do this with team or small group.  Share with one another.

Design an organization that does what we do better, or would make TIP obsolete.
Helps understand group weakness and see what we do well.  What makes strong, healthy, stable organization?

How do we create a container that will help dissipate tension?

Peer Evaluations
Keep simple.
For each person list 3 things we value and 3 things to work on in next 3 months.
Not complaints, but specific suggestions of things to work on.
Each person will share his or her own evaluation first.
Budget time, clarify how long it will last and set aside time for all to be done at once.
If time, also mention what we are looking forward to (answer last).

Creates seasonal resolutions each quarter.
Like water, constant/regular space to flow.
Reinforces health, stability, and growth.
Creates routine for sharing feedback around the work.
Q:  How do we best deal with the issue of tone vs. content?
A:  It’s challenging when you can’t see and be with one another.
Ideas:  Video conferencing.  Goggle video chat/DimDim more reliable than Skype.
Ongoing training.  Meet up for face to face retreat at least 1xyr.
Fold organizational retreat into national/regional gathering.
Talk outside of conference calls more frequently.  In addition work in pairs and focus on specific task.  Rotate to get to know one another better on personal level.
Pairs help build relationships and stronger teams.

NASCO workshop:  This is delegated to the one I love!
Delegate tasks to 2 people to bring to larger group.

Problem being stuck doing too much/too little.
Can’t run as far.  Out and back like the tide.

Q:  About Structure/type of org.  Need to untangle legalese.
Collective/Co-op/Fiscal Sponsor/Nonprofit

Begin researching other models.  Call National Federation of Co-ops.
Idea:  Hire for contracts/not stipends.  One person paid to make budget work.

Notes & Next Steps (from Kiran):
Ideas and action steps:

    *

      Peer evaluations
    *

Have space throughout the year where we can be in the same space and do health and support work at that space
    *

Gather in person when there is a regional gathering
    *

In addition to main responsibilities, have smaller projects that people work in pairs, where those pairs shift so that we can communicate
          O

Delegation! This is delegated to the one I love
    *

Idea: hire for a contracts instead of stipends.
    *

Pair up and research different models for the organization: co-op, non-profit, stay the way we are...

Homework from this meeting:

In small groups, come up with:

   1.  A newspaper article (headline, and some ideas of the content) about Icarus 100 years from now (this will be most useful to you if it is specific to icarus)
   2.  Develop the organization that will put Icarus out of business/make Icarus obsolete. Things to think about: their name, composition, services they offer, how they're funded, etc...

Groups:

angel, eric, and molly

annie, madigan, and will

Next meeting (Feb 3rd)

Personal check-ins

Financial snapshot

Each group shares its newspaper articles, then the group talks about it

Each group shares its organization that developed, and the group talks about it

Note taker: take note of what traits specifically make these organizations stronger

Decide: when we're writing our priorities for the group, what's the time frame of these priorities? 2 years? 3? 5? 7?

Homework after the meeting of the 3rd:

Individually, list your own top 5 priorities for the group for the decided upon time frame.

Meet up with a partner (partner up with someone you work with the least often) and discuss/negotiate. By the end of your call, combine your two sets of priorities to 4 top priorities as a partner (note: this is less than what you're both starting with!)

Meeting of the 10th:

Each partner shares its set of 4 priorities, leaving the group with 12 to choose from.

Discuss similarities, differences

List these 12 on a goggle group or wiki. Each person then will be able to go and star their top 4 choices (no double starring the same item!)

After that:

Look at what rises to the top.

This is when you want to maybe work on changing the wording-- but we could do that together on our meeting on the 17th, and I could help facilitate this process. (Can you add me to the goggle doc with the 12 priorities so I can see the wording and better help facilitate discussion for the meeting on the 17th?)

We’ll talk more after this!
