NOTE - NEEDS PROOFING. Also there could be a problem with the linked files, there was an error in the InDesign process that I don't quite understand. Basically we need to proof with the printer to make sure it will look good and not pixellated or something unexpected.

By and For People Struggling With Psychiatric Diagnosis and Madness

The Icarus Project was created by people labeled with psychiatric diagnoses such as "bipolar," and "schizophrenia" who view our experiences as mad gifts rather than “diseases” or “disorders." By taking care of our double-edged blessings, we can reach places of great vision and creativity. But like the mythical boy Icarus, we also have the potential to fly dangerously close to the sun -- into realms of trauma and isolation -- and crash in a blaze of fire and confusion. At our heights, we create music, art, words, and inventions which touch people’s souls and change the course of society. At our depths, we may find ourselves alienated and alone, incarcerated in psychiatric institutions, or dead by our own hand. Despite the risks we face, and knowing that people with extreme states of consciousness have been persecuted throughout history, we also believe we are capable of some of the world's most brilliant contributions.

Learning to Use Our Wings

The Icarus Project is a place for anyone living with "madness
" or different states of consciousness to connect with friends, share support, explore ourselves beyond psychiatric labels -- and change the world. We learn from each other’s victories and missteps, offer stories and art, and help each other grow. We strive to create a new culture and language that resonates with our actual experiences, rather than trying to fit our lives into the conventional mental health system.

Together we navigate
the extremes of our heights and the depths of our depressions. We're exploring -- with or without psychiatric drugs -- the potentials offered by holistic health, diet, activism, art, and spiritual focus. We embrace diversity and respect different choices. Often we channel our tremendous energy into creation - be it by painting murals, writing books, composing music or traveling across the country, converting diesel cars to run on vegetable oil, or raising permaculture gardens that are nourished with waste water. In our own ways we're all working to create full and independent lives, where the ultimate goal isn't just to survive, but to thrive. Despite the effort necessary just to stay balanced and grounded, we also intend to fly -- and make the world better, more beautiful, and way more interesting.

The Icarus Project is a place that allows us feel less alienated, and, as individuals and a community, to tap into the true potential that lies between brilliance and madness.

 The
Icarus
Project
was created by a group of people diagnosed with Bipolar  and similar diagnoses who see conditions like ours as dangerous gifts to be cultivated and taken care of rather than “diseases” or “disorders” needing to be cured. With these double edged blessings  we have the ability to fly to places of great vision and creativity, but like the mythical boy Icarus, we also have the potential to fly dangerously close to the sun -- into realms of delusion and psychosis -- and crash in a blaze of fire and confusion. At our heights we may find ourselves capable of creating music, art, words, and inventions which touch people’s souls and shape the course of history. At our depths we may end up alienated and alone, incarcerated in psychiatric institutions, or dead by our own hands. Despite these risks, we understand that we are members of a group that has been misunderstood and persecuted throughout history, but has also been responsible for some its most brilliant creations. And we are proud.

Learning to Use Our Wings

The Icarus Project is a place for anyone with "madness" or different states of consciousness to connect with each other, create alternative support, explore our experiences beyond labels and psychiatric diagnoses, and change the world through activism. We learn from each other’s missteps and victories, share stories and art.  We strive to create a new culture and language that resonates with our actual experiences, rather than trying to fit our lives into the conventional framework offered by current dominant mental health models.

Some of us use psychiatric drugs to regulate and dampen the extremes of our heights and the hopeless depths of our depressions, while others turn to holistic health and live with the mercurial nature of our moods and minds through diet, exercise, and spiritual focus. Often we find that we can handle ourselves better when we channel our tremendous energy into creation - be it by painting murals, writing books, composing music or traveling across the country, converting diesel cars to run on vegetable oil or raising gardens that are nourished with the waste water from our showers. In our own ways, we're all working to create full and independent lives for ourselves where the ultimate goal is not just to survive and "manage our symptoms", but to thrive. Despite the effort necessary just to stay balanced and grounded, we intend to make the world we live in better, more beautiful, and way more interesting.

The Icarus Project is a place that helps people feel less alienated, and allows us -- both as individuals and as a community -- to tap into the true potential that lies between brilliance and madness.

ORANGE SIDE (taking up from Will's revision above)
The Icarus Project was created by people labeled with various psychiatric diagnoses who view our experiences as mad gifts to be cultivated and taken care of rather than “diseases” or “disorders” to be managed. With these double edged blessings we have the ability to fly to places of great vision and creativity, but like the mythical boy Icarus, we also have the potential to fly dangerously close to the sun -- into realms of trauma and isolation -- and crash in a blaze of fire and confusion. At our heights we may find ourselves capable of creating music, art, words, and inventions which touch people’s souls and shape the course of history. At our depths we may end up alienated and alone, incarcerated in psychiatric institutions, or dead by our own hands. Despite these risks, we understand that people experiencing extreme and altered states of consciousness have been persecuted throughout history, but have also been responsible for some its most brilliant creations. And we are proud.

BLACK SIDE
Learning to Use Our Wings

The Icarus Project is a place for anyone with "mad" and different states of consciousness to connect with each other, create alternative support beyond the labels of (removed "bipolar") psychiatric diagnoses and, through activism, to change reality for all marginalized people. We are learning from each other’s mistakes and victories, sharing stories and art, and helping to create a new culture and language that resonates with our actual experiences rather than trying to fit our lives into the conventional framework offered by the current mental health establishment.

(Removed "While" - for me it creates a hierarchy) Many of us use psychiatric drugs to regulate and dampen the extremes of our heights and the hopeless depths of our depressions; others among us use holistic health and live with the mercurial nature of our moods and minds through diet, exercise, and spiritual focus. Often we find that we can handle ourselves better when we channel our tremendous energy into creation: some of us paint murals and write books, some of us compose music or travel across country, some of us convert diesel cars to run on vegetable oil and raise gardens that are nourished with the waste water from our showers. In our own ways we’re all struggling to create full and independent lives for ourselves where the ultimate goal is not just to survive and "manage our illness." but to thrive. Despite the effort necessary just to stay balanced and grounded, we intend to make the world we live on better, more beautiful, and way more interesting.??

The Icarus Project is a place that helps people (removed "like us" for broader feel) feel less alienated, and allows us -- both as individuals and as a community -- to tap into the true potential that lies between brilliance and madness.

edits

Is it best to make edits directly into this document or is there a better way?

revisions

if you make revisions directly it save the previous versions. I liek that you mark the revisions in italics though.

I'm going to take a shot at synthesis. These are all great Angel!

Perhaps we could all post

Perhaps we could all post multiple revisions in the comments and pick and choose? I can't open the Indesign files on this computer -- how importatnt is character count? surely we can play with fonts, sizes, etc to make it look right?

I would support eliminating all references to the word "bipolar" entirely, just as we have done in the forums. Even if we talk about it being a diagnostic label we are implicitly giving it quite a bit of power by stating that as our ground. Much better to use the general terms "psychiatric diagnoses" with no specifics mentioned....

I will think about it and post possible revisions

also will  I approved the other 3 people waiting to join this group

it will be a lot easier if

it will be a lot easier if we stick to the character count  -esp if you can't open the indd files :) - but if someone wants to redesign...

i agree with the spirit of eliminating DSM medical language, but the problem is that unless people see "bipolar" they are not going to know this is about them. So it's about bringing people in who identify with that language. I think it's fine to say "such as bipolar" if we're clear we're a group that challenges that label,

It's a tricky discussion but

It's a tricky discussion but for the purposes of reaching people who have been labeled, I just don't think referring to psychiatric diagnosis in general is going to get the message across to invite people.

What does everyone think?

I did take "bipolar" out

I did take "bipolar" out of the title for the orange side - maybe this is a good middle ground, take it out there but leave a reference to it in text?

My Thoughts

My general/comprehensive alterations/suggestions at the top of this page in bold.

I think to only reference "bipolar" once is okay...but in conjunction with the founders (thus on orange side, and in tandem with "psychitric diagnoses").

Is there any thought about saying 'psych medications' vs. 'psych drugs'? just another language stumper ; ) don't mean for it to put a kink in the works...i also didn't make any changes around that part.

These are great edits annie

These are great edits annie and everyone --

i've tried to synthesize it all into the versions in bold at the top.

What do you think -- I took out "fixed" because I don't see anyone saying mental health issues can be fixed; it not part of any dominant discourse. I think "managed" is more widely part of the dominant framework and implies 'uncurable symptoms." We could also just cut that phrase entirely -- "rather than “diseases” or “disorders” makes the point sufficiently. thanks for everyone's input and let me know what you think of the bold version.

I think "psych drugs"

I think "psych drugs" conveys the similarities between all psychoactive substances rather than re-creating the 'good medications bad drugs' dichotomy," and gets people to think about their decision more carefully when they've likely been told a 'medications are good for you' message from their docs. but it's a small point. i'd kind of like it to say "some of us use cannabis as a tool for living with our minds" or something like that to get the point across even more strongly, but it opens up a can of worms.
