Tony Wood Meeting 2/19/10 (with Annie)

Ittleson Foundation

Grant Application Brainstorm

• Ittleson grants given for 3 years max – what can be done in this time frame?

-       Need compelling narrative, with quantifiable & attainable objectives

• Ittleson wants something left behind, they offer in-and-out funding

-       At the end of the grant period, what milestone will have been reached?

-       Cannot look like “more of the same” in proposal…rather, what’s happening/needed presently, and where can/will we go with funding?

Outputs – easier, tangible and quantifiable productions

Outcomes – harder to identify, anticipate

• Ittleson expects orgs will go other places for supplemental funding

-       want other funders engaged: validity to initiative

• Letter of Intent

-       get in a “best shot” early (late May/early June) – Tony will give feedback for revision (final due in Sept.)

-       2.5 pgs to get board interested enough for full proposal (additional 2.5 pgs)

-       generate excitement and curiosity for full proposal

-       power of idea, transformative possibilities

-       less about the details (unless prison campaign – then need more details)

-       less HOW, more WHAT

-       1 month after letter of intent, full application due:

o      budget, basic info, support letters (3 external people who provide vantage points about need for TIP/project, uniqueness of project, and why TIP is the group to execute this project

• NARRATIVES: focus on Community? or Prison (as subcommunity of sorts)?

-       separate or tie together? probably just one, as a stand-alone, would be more appealing to funder - risky and unclear to wed together

-       PRISON

o      intriguing, but the burden is we may not be as far along yet gathering deeper knowledge about thresholds, how prisons function, how we’d access; need some level of “buy-in”, how to interface – establish before seeking funding for this specific campaign

* Look into Ittleson history of funding/applications related to prisons and mental health

-       AUTONOMOUS GROUP MOVEMENT

o      there’s an increasing demand, and has been ongoing organic organization

o      “Open Source” mentality (ie: autonomous local groups) – appealing, frontline, unique

o      now, ask for grant support for:

§       national strategic collaboration with local groups

§       one in every region of the country? need measurement, and reason for quantity selected

§       national strategy

§       tools

§       bolstering existing groups

-       Third/additional narrative: NETWORK

o      knit autonomous groups together: expanding community and linking

o      facilitating linkage; need the groups and individual members to see the value of linkage

o      creating system for Icarus to one day be self-sustaining; local groups linked so collective could, in theory, dissolve

Best narratives on the table (EITHER/BOTH):

1.     Icarus movement that will live beyond Icarus structure

2.      X  # of strong local groups
