Tony Wood Meeting – August 5, 2009
(Annie, NYC)
FEEDBACK:
• TIP is an easier “sell” now than when he first was introduced to it, took a chance on it
• TIP is well-positioned to take the next leap
STRATEGIES/TIPS:
- “Dissemination Grant” for CI
o Propose goal of presence on x# of campuses by ___ ...
- Dissemination Tour
- Presentation to potential funders – targeted communication
o An event at NYU?
o Consider how to shape event according to who’s in the room
- Leadership Training Program
o Bring students from all over for a weekend to NYU as a sort of “training laboratory” *
- Project: Update CI website
o “Technical outreach” – hot sell right now
o Package into grant: “Enhance technological communication/capacity”
* Use “comfortable language” in grants…to “package” for funders
1. HOW YOU PACKAGE
- Package it in ways that sound familiar to make funders comfortable
- In grants, reference allies/collaborators who have titles, & recognizable public/community accomplishments:
e.g. Brad Lewis, President’s Service Award at NYU, Newsweek article, 20-20 segment, etc.
2. WHO’S BUYING
- Look beyond Mental Health for potential funders:
o YOUTH
o Wellness & Preventative Health
o LGBT community
- Funder Collaboratives
o Groups of various funders focused on similar topic, e.g. LGBT
* Ittleson Foundation: currently only funding 1 area at a time (not mental health right now, maybe next year)
- Seek a “Replication Grant” next time Ittleson is funding mental health?
PURSUE:
- Meet with Anita Altman
o Friday, 8/14 at 9:30 AM
o Ask about Lauren Katsowich (?) a woman involved in an organization that acts as staff for funders – may know of other potential donors
- NY Community Trust
o Donor-directed
o Endowments by field
- Len McNally: LGBT funding
FOLLOW UP:
- August/September: mail him Campus Icarus “Seed Packet”
- December/January re: Ittleson Foundation funding area
