The Gainesville Icarus Project is a peer-led community support group that fosters a safe space, free from stereotypes or judgement. The Icarus Project approaches mental health holistically and critically, working to address the political and social causes of mental distress.

We support each other, because friendship and community has the power to mend our disconnected society. And we work together to promote alternatives to the dominant views that label our issues as 'illnesses," and that offer us quick fixes of pills and needles.

We envision the project to be a group of rebel-rousers, calling into question the paradigm of the mainstream and encouraging people to take their lives back from a system of consumption, constant production, and isolation. We advocate for a world that is a little more free and a little less insane..

We meet at the Civic Media Center on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. From 7 to 7:30 we have a meeting to discuss the and plan future Icarus projects. Then from 7:30 to 8:30 we have space to support each other in a peer-led, non-hierarchical model.

*We may soon be changing the time and location, so check back soon for updates :)

Time/Location Change

This last month we had a bit of a problem with scheduling. We had a time conflict with Free University (which our Icarus chapter is a branch of).

Next Month's Info

 Hey friends,

The topic for the March meeting will be "spirituality in the radical community." We'll talk about how we have been helped and/or harmed by different forms of spirituality, as well as different (spiritual) techniques for 'grounding' and 'de-escalating' someone having a breakdown/breakthrough. And as always...

Next Meeting January 20th

Thanks to all who came out to last nights meeting. I really appreciate the safe space and gentle atmosphere that we have created together. I can't wait to see where this group goes. On that note...

Next Meeting Info

Hey everyone,

Thanks to those who attended the first meeting! For those new to this email list, there was one preliminary meeting last month to brainstorm about what this group could become. It was really helpful and encouraging! The group is still in the beginning stages, so the potentials are limitless. Here's some info about the group and the next meeting:
