FRI – JUNE 5

*Film Screening (4-6 pm C1105) : The Doctor Who Hears Voices*
THE DOCTOR WHO HEARS VOICES tells the true story of Ruth’s unorthodox journey to regain her profession as a doctor who hears voices. Ruth’s journey of reclamation is guided by a maverick psychologist, Rufus May, who believes there is no such thing as schizophrenia, that medication can destroy lives and that there’s nothing wrong with hearing voices. In this powerful and thought-provoking film, BAFTA-award winning director Leo Regan, takes a challenging look at how society deals with mental illness, using an innovative mix of contemporaneous documentary footage and dramatized scenes. To protect her anonymity, Ruth is played by BAFTA-nominated actress Ruth Wilson and some details have been changed.
*Film Screening (7-9 pm C1105) : The Devil and Daniel Johnston*
His drawings and sketches are exhibited and sold worldwide. Beck, Wilco, Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam have recorded his songs. But beneath Daniel Johnston’s success as an artist and musician is an incredible story of genius touched by madness: diagnosed as manic-depressive. Johnston has spent the last three decades of his life in-and-out of mental institutions. Told through a compelling combination of interviews, home movies and performance footage, THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON is a “harrowing, hilarious, and ultimately moving new documentary and film.” -Jim Farber & Elizabeth Weltzman, New York Daily News
