12/20/09 Community Conference Call

Present:
Inel-Asheville, NC
Lauramarie-Sacramento, CA

Lauramarie is making mushroom curry w/peppers. inel can smell it in her mind and it smells gooooooooood!

We talked about the zine working group and how it's easier sometimes to do things alone instead of coordinating with a bunch of different people all over the place.
Here is a link to the Zine Working Group: https://site.icarusprojectarchive.org/icaruszineproject
and the newsletter forum thread: https://site.icarusprojectarchive.org/fo.....newsletter

Lauramarie's zine, Functionally Ill, has a new issue (#6) coming out. This one is short with new cover art that is playful and fun. She's been publishing Functionally Ill for over 2 years now and has been making zines for about 20 years. Wow!

There is a sticky at the top of Creativity forum about zines produced by Icaristas and how to get your hands on them: https://site.icarusprojectarchive.org/fo.....hp?t=15915
You can pm Lauramarie if you'd like a copy of her zines.

Postal Bliss thread is inspiring! https://site.icarusprojectarchive.org/fo.....highlight=
We both have had pen pals since childhood. Icarus pen pals are the best because they "get it". Lauramarie used to play games via mail with pen pals as a child.

Behind the scenes, The Icarus Project is nearly out of funding. https://site.icarusprojectarchive.org/fo.....hp?t=17812
We launched a membership campaign at the beginning of December and will be doing a follow up/reminder email soon. Really appreciate the support so far and totally understand many of us have limited means. We appreciate all the many ways people contribute to this project and community!

There were thoughts in past about starting a local group in Sacramento. Start up felt impossible and organizers needed support.

Asheville Radical Mental Health Collective just had 4 year anniversary of meeting consistently and continuously. We have a commitment to hold the space for that one person who may come and really need to be heard. With time and numbers of people participating the group has a life, momentum and impetus all it's own outside of any few organizers.

Ideas for seeding local groups:
Leave postcards/icarus materials around town and make a forum post for your location where people may find you.
Gather a handful of people together so the burden of organizing does not lie on any one individual.
Once you start meeting, try to maintain consistency of location/day/time to build momentum.
Also visit local groups near you if you're able (SF group has been meeting again and is really solid and seems energized).
You can also pm local organizers elsewhere for support and ideas and come to future community calls to connect with others.

Inel will send Lauramarie some TIP materials to seed Sacramento!

It was nice talking! We ended the call early.

Next 3rd Sunday Call of 2010 will be January 17th, 3pm (est)!
