Aby and Will of Freedom Center met with lawyers, legal advocates, activists and survivors from across the US at the annual National Association for Rights Protection and Advocacy conference, held in Baltimore, Maryland. Icarus and Freedom Center organizer Leah Harris received a standing ovation for her incredible keynote address about being locked up as a teenager, and Aby and Will presented a workshop about the legal advocacy work of the Freedom Center called "How Lawyers Can Be Allies. Leah talked about Icarus in her speech and launched a youth initiative in NARPA to provide some balance to the baby-boomer generation NARPA leadership. Aby Adams at NARPA (Leah, above, and Aby, left)Highlights of the conference included Professor Michael Perlin's presentation on the use of psychiatric incarceration against political dissidents around the world, and Bazelon Center's Karen Bower discussing college mental health issues, including incidents of students being expelled after suicide attempts or cutting. And everyone was blown away by Vera Sharav's powerfully researched indictment of pharma greed and drug harm -- check out her outstanding Alliance for Human Research Protection website.
