I don't remember what page this is on, but Herman makes a point that for true healing to happen, survivors of trauma need public recognition of what they went through in their community and have it validated and honored, She says that soldiers get that now in some ways, like the Vietman Wall memorial, but rape survivors are isolated and not allowed to share their experiences with their community and receive that sort of support. It made me imagine - What if in your town park there were a statue of a strong woman and it was dedicated to all the women who had been raped in your town? And on a day each year people honored survivors with picnics and a holiday and speaches? This thought made me very happy.
I also love the way she makes a point about how trauma is how we socialize and initiate men and women into adult society - Young men by war and young women by rape, thus creating a society of PTSD.
I really like this book a lot. The fact that she was one of the people fighting the DSM about their diagnosis of masochistic personality disorder for women who experience domestic violence, that made me think she is all right. Stop blaming the victims of abuse for their abuse and acknowledge the REAL reasons that that it happens. A sick society.
What do you guys think? xo xo Awen
