Asymmetrical Feathers

These posters were originally hand-printed in an edition of 150 by Kim Christoffel (eris) of the Northland Poster Collective.

The text of the poster reads "There is Beauty in a Crazy Crooked Mind. Birds with Perfectly Symmetrical Feathers Can't Actually Fly."

I discovered this strange fact when I was researching wing structure while writing my introduction to our book this winter. Apparently the aerodynamics of flight require asymmetry - only earth-bound birds like Dodos and domesticated chickens have perfectly regular wingfeathers.

This image was designed to be the first of many Icarus Project posters aimed at raising awareness about the dangerous gift that can be hidden within "mental illness," and at raising money for the Icarus Project! We are currently out of the hand-printed posters, but you can download the image below and print it out for your own use (and even take it to a copy shop to get it enlarged to poster size.)
