MAD PRIDE WEEK
AT THE EVERGREEN STATE COLLEGE
The Icarus Project is seeking submissions for Mad Pride Week, May 16th to May 22nd! Mad Pride Week is a celebration of dangerous gifts commonly labeled as “mental illness.” Instead of the shame, silence, and alienation that we experience in society we are choosing to reclaim our identities and empower ourselves with a week of events, workshops, film showings, community organizing, performances, and more!
During Mad Pride Week we will also create a Free Wellness Space with free services (acupuncture, massage, herbalism...), literature, food, herbs, tea, and community resources. We need donations, volunteers, and practitioners.

Also, here's the schedule for Mad Pride Week!!!!
The Icarus Project of The Evergreen State College presents Mad Pride Week! During Mad Pride Week we will explore and share alternatives to mainstream mental health, which can often be oppressive or exclusive. During this week we will envision more liberatory, community based options to taking care of ourselves and those we care about. Come join us!
Monday, May 16th (LIB 4300)
3:00 - 5:00 PM Radical Mental Health Workshop
Problematic binary definitions of mental health experience (you're either "normal" or "crazy") are rampant in mainstream culture. The Icarus Project recognizes the multiplicities of mental health experience and strives to create a community that regards the range of diversity as something to be respected and even rejoiced in. In this workshop, we will explore ways to promote safer spaces in our communities. We'll discuss the importance of sharing our personal stories, giving and receiving support, and building communities that are truly welcoming to all marginalized people.
6:00 - 9:00 PM Madness First Aid Kit Workshop
The Icarus Project invites you to make Madness First Aid Kits with us! A Madness First Aid Kit is a collection of tools and self-care items that you can have stored away for a bad day or a crisis. At the workshop we will be collaging boxes for our kits and discussing what we can put in them. We will also be making journals and other arts & crafts. We will be providing art supplies, but feel free to bring some to share!
Tuesday, May 17th (LIB 4300)
3:00 - 5:00 PM OMFG Presents: The Importance of Starting A Men's Group
6:00 - 8:00 PM OMFG Presents: Masculinity and You
Join Olympia Men and Friend's Group for workshops on challenging patriarchy and transformative personal growth!

3:00 - 5:00 PM Mad Tea Party! (Food! Tea! Fun!)
Join The Icarus Project for a Mad Tea Party! There will be food and tea.
6:00 - 9:00 PM Facilitation and Consensus Decision Making
This workshop will benefit activists, community organizers, and also students who participate in activities at The Evergreen State College; it will allow them to work better as organizations by teaching through lectures and role play. Along with this, any student who has a seminar will benefit from learning conflict resolution and communication skills.
Thursday, May 19th (The Organic Farm)
3:00 - 5:00 PM Taste the Revolution! Consent with Jen and Zoe
In the interest of moving towards living in a world where everyone is having only sex they love to have, Jen and Zoe are facilitating this conversation on consent. We'll talk about fucking, triggers, knowing what you want, checking in with yourself, accountability, and self-care.
6:00 - 9:00 PM Boundary Setting, Self-Care, and Radical Social Change
Crisitien Storm is back for another workshop at Evergreen. This workshop offers practical skills grounded in anti-oppression analysis. Participants practice boundary setting strategies while attending to larger social and political contexts that deeply inform how we take care of ourselves.
Friday, May 19th (SEM 2 A1107)
3:00 - 5:00 PM SDS Presents: Counterinsurgency and Policing
As the Police State strengthens, we must continue to rise in opposition. As Olympia is inundated with a new police chief and brand new jail/city hall, police presence and repression heightens. Someone who has diligently studied as well as experienced police repression is author of "Our Enemies in Blue" and "American Methods: Torture and the Logic of Domination" and Rose City Copwatch member, Kristian Williams.
Kristian Williams will present his recent research on counterinsurgency and domestic policing. He'll outline the counterinsurgency approach, document the process of police/military crossover, and examine the implications for political activists.
6:00 - 9:00 PM Intimate Violence and Abuse in Radical Communities
In this workshop we will explore the topic of how communities can respond to abuse and oppression in ways that are both effective and as compassionate as possible. We’ll explore what forms that can take and what peoples’ experiences have been, good and bad. Our intention is to look at real examples but also to focus on patterns that recur from situation to situation.
Saturday, May 20th (The Organic Farm)
2:00 - 4:00 PM Queer & Trans Mental Health
In this workshop we will open space for creative investigations of queer/trans experiences with mental health that inspire us to break isolation, find our stories reflected, share strategies towards healing, and build community resilience in the face of a shaming, crazy-making world.
4:00 - 7:00 PM LGBTQ Community Organizing Potluck!
After the Queer & Trans Mental Health Workshop we will be having a community organizing potluck just for queer folks. Come to the potluck to network and socialize with other LGBTQ folks that are interested in starting a queer radical mental health project in Olympia.
8:00 - 10:00 PM Gallery and Open Mic
Inspiration can come form a variety of places. Our most extreme emotional or mental states can lead us to introspection or revelation. Join us for a night of poetry, performances, stories, visual art, and more! If you want to share your stuff all you need to do is show up!
Sunday, May 21st (The Organic Farm)
2:00 - 5:00 PM Creating Community Support Networks
Experiences labeled "mentally ill" affect us all, especially when we're living, working, or organizing in communities. There are a lot of big questions on our minds regarding mental health, such as:
What structures can we put in place to help prevent crisis situations from occurring, or minimize their potentially negative impacts on the community when they do occur?
What can we do for our friends in times of extreme crisis to keep them from either getting locked up or hurting themselves?
What can we do afterwards to help everyone heal?
How can we minimize feelings of alienation, anger, sadness, insecurity, etc. and create communities that foster self-determination and support us all?
How do we address and prevent burnout among activists and organizers?
Using a popular education framework, we will explore these key questions together. We will also learn about what a Mad Map/ Wellness Map is and make our own maps to share with our friends and loved ones.
6:00 - 8:00 PM The Icarus Project Work Party
Interested in joining our chapter of The Icarus Project? Come to this work party! We'll be making plans for next year, talking about new and old projects, debriefing on Mad Pride Week, and more!
