People think that the phrase "Nature red in tooth and claw" was a victorian misnomer, because more often than not, the prey escapes attack from the predator.  But consider if you will the fact that the predator did not choose to be a predator, any less than the herbivour chose to be the prey.  The predator must eat or die.
