Art Show Callout
Submitted by rafi on Tue, 04/25/2006 - 1:42amThe Icarus Project is a radical, community-based website, support network, and underground media project created by and for people struggling with bipolar and other related forms of madness. We see our conditions not as diseases to be cure but as dangerous gifts to be cultivated and cared for.
We aim to transform, subvert, and radically alter the culture and language of madness - and this summer, as a part of that effort, the Icarus Project, in partnership with the Fountain Gallery, is excited to present "Pieces of Mind: A Celebration of Dangerous Gifts." The exhibit will not only feature works of members of Fountain House and the New York City Icarus community, but of Icarus Project participants all across the country and the world. The opening of the show, on July 6th, will be an interactive creative event that will hopefully inspire many others to revel in their madness and to sow the seeds of change through cultural transformation throughout the world.
If you are someone who is touched by madness, we invite you to submit your work for consideration in this year's show. Art that is not used in the show may be used in future Icarus Project publications, on the website, or elsewhere, with your permission. Submissions should include a title (if applicable), a description of the piece (size, medium, specific hanging/shipping requirements, etc.), your name, email, and/or phone number.
We encourage everyone to submit a brief artist's statement about the role madness plays in your life and/or the submitted piece. Though larger pieces and sculptures may be considered, we want to balance quality with the ability to show as many beautiful works of art as possible. Pieces can be returned to you after the show, or sold at the gallery if you so wish.
The deadline for submissions is May 22, 2006. Those whose work has been accepted will be notified on May 29th. Works must arrive at the gallery by June 8th. If you live in a country where eleven days may not be enough time to get your piece to us, please let us know. Send a digital image of your work to artshow@theicarusproject.net, or, if necessary,
