TIP Moderators Phone Meet Notes 03/21/09
In Attendance: Bmad, Strangedoll, E-catcher, Dawndelion, Nickb, SilverElf.
Discussion – R&R forum, pword, description, organic groups intro, letting community know about what mods are doing behind the scenes, community agreements on use of TIP space, language modification, tools for crisis intervention, review of policies.
Strangedoll – How to tell community we are working on something – now it is not happening.. The tic issue was talked about for a week before anything happened. Community noticed and it looked like we weren’t doing anything. Many reports later, the community wants to know when stuff if being worked on. Maybe a post that said – we are talking about you sounds crappy. Might make bad feelings or paranoia. What is a sensitive way to do that.
Bmad – Historical pov. Something that is difficult for all of us in this work. Icarus is unique w/people all over the planet in time zones and emotional states. Working groups need to be empowered. Partnering with someone as soon as a situation comes up. Use warning signs and delegating who does what along the way. New mods and transitions makes things challenging. Buddy system with mods using tools and delegating. Natural relationships in the community will help.
Erin – Instead of public post, PM people involved in situation.
Strangedoll – Like the idea.
SilverElf – Maybe a spot in organic groups to provide a place to notate contact.
NickB – Can create a note database of contacts with problems.
Strangedoll – Likes idea of database by username and all contact with problem will be in one place where we all have access.
Nickb – Organic groups: Links in sidebar – tools/tasks/wiki/calendar – nav bar on top. Submit person, page is added, then just add notes.
Stangedoll – We’ll need to play around with the groups then ask questions to Nickb.
Bmad – Great tool. We need clarity on empowerment – warning steps, etc. What can we do now? Agenda for language (ban), protocol.
Strangedoll – Clarifying what happened with Tic. Community guidelines suspended in R&R? Tic case outside the rules, we should remove text “community guidelines don’t apply here”. Forum IS moderated.
Bmad – Definitely at the heart of needing clarification. No legal rules can be suspended on any part of site. Registration agreements and guidelines are separate but neither can be suspended for the site to legally run.
Nickb – Change R&R to “free speech zone, enter at you own risk”. Still rage but we still can’t be racist or make personal attacks. Issue on comm call on Sunday, you can say fuck that and fuck this, but not fuck you.
SilverElf – Broad consensus on separating humor from rage. Poll on website as to usefulness?
Strangedoll – Maybe open dialogue for subforum. Will post poll. Separate log in for R&R. Also add to poll about
Nickb – Separate log in is technically complicated. However, R&R only viewable if you’re logged in.
SilverElf – Polls for policy decisions = are polls binding if majority wants or input only? Maybe an issue at some point if community is involved.
Strangedoll – Wants more community input but hears SilverElf.
Erin – Agrees. Community getting involved can get complicated.
Bmad – Agrees. Important for mods to know implications of polling. Polling good for pulse and emotional temperature of community but working group decisions left to working group.
Consensus – Post to community on policy changes and registration agreement and guidelines. Poll on R&R split.
Nicb – Autoprune delete pages that haven’t been posted on in a certain amount of time. Benefit is to cut out endless amounts of crazy scariness that would send people away. Maybe not as intimidating? Makes rest of forums faster.
Erin – Autoprune in R&R only?
Nickb – Rages can be autoprune only.
Bmad – Good idea for rages forum and provide a sticky so people can archive themselves.
SilverElf – Ignore button – block any users posts from your sight.
Bmad – Also share the technology, good tool for community.
Nickb – Easy to install. Will do if wanted.
Consensus on Ignore button. Nickb will install.
Strangedoll - Image policy changed?
Bmad – Images can be taken down at discretion of mods on R&R.
Consensus on images policy .
Strangedoll – From Sunday’s community call - mods need to be more willing to take a thread and put it on the back room for a while to keep community safe. But slower to ban people. Mods can discuss and reinstate later if agreed.
Bmad – Supports that. Need consensus to change the word from banning to time out or whatever. Partner with another to get a thread into the backroom for discussion. Can always reinstate later.
Keeping space safe is important.
Strangedoll – Change language from BAN to …
Bmad – Transformative justice concept. Time out? Cool off? Take a break?
SilverElf – Conditions on ending – time period and contact with mods on process for break ending.
Bmad – Expand language in registration agreement as to process. Reg agreement is posted in mod forum. We need clarity in what process will look like.
Strangedoll – Concerned about tic being banned. No reply to will’s contact. How long is ban? More contact or not? Does not want him to be lost because of transition during drama.
Bmad – Propose one mod partner with will to contact tic for follow up via email and phone.
Consensus change word from ban to break.
SilverElf – Banning IP address for total trolls who do not contribute to community at all, please keep this option open.
Consensus in agreement for banning IP addresses if needed.
Closing of meeting –
Bmad – Strangedoll to partner with will to contact tic and follow up with new policies.
Strangedoll – Will do, not completely comfortable but willing to work with will.
Bmad – Thank you – take action, empowerment.
Erin – Continue talking about buddy concept on forum.
SilverElf – Thanks and keep discussion going in moving working group model to delegating tasks and involvement.
Consensus for another phone meeting in one month or so, will schedule online.
Strangedoll – Many thanks.
Nickb - Organic groups – will enable and post instructions on the mod forum.
Bmad – Notes in “envisioning icarus” on mods and their roll in TIP online community.
