"Is Polyphasic Consciousness Necessary for Global Survival?" So asks Tara W. Lumpkin in her article in the journal, Anthropology of Consciousness, American Anthropological Association, titled Perceptual Diversity: Is Polyphasic Consciousness Necessary for Global Survival? What in the world is Polyphasic Consciousness? What is Perceptual Diversity?
To simplify, using an agricultural metaphor, it can basically be described as biodiversity on the level of perception and culture. Lumpkin’s article suggests that we need a diverse perceptual repertoire. The scientific method of understanding is just one way of perceiving our multiverse.
“Many of these perceptual processes are transrational, altered state of consciousness (meditation, trance, dreams, imagination) and are not considered valid processes for accessing knowledge by science (which is based primarily upon quantification, reductionism, and the experimental method).”
