Twitter
I received a tweet from a woman who made a comment about a dream that I mentioned in an earlier tweet. When I checked out her profile page, I noticed that she listed herself as a "manic depressive". I told her in a second tweet that I was amazed that she listed her diagnosis on a social network site. She tweeted me and said that her diagnosis is a big part of her life and that she didn't see any reason to hide it. We spent a few more moments discussing mental health concerns. Before ending our conversation, she sent me the link to the Icarus Project.
Icarus, I believe, is from Greek mythology. He was the one that made wings and attached them to his back with wax. He was so excited to be able to fly that he flew higher and higher. Oblivious to the danger of heat, he flew closer and closer to the sun. Eventually, the wax holding his wings together melted and he crashed to the earth. When I saw the site name, I was moved because it is such an accurate description of Bipolar Disorder, but from material that has been around for many, many years.
The woman who gave me the link to this website was apparently very insightful. How did she discern that I too have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder? Was it something I said that alerted her? Or was it my frantic, sometimes rapid fire, subject-jumping tweets that revealed my manic nature? Whatever, the reason, her thoughtfulness is much appreciated.
